Marble stoup

Two stoups probably from the chapel of the Casa Comunale di Oristano, characterised by the shield with Aragon poles and two coats of arms of Oristano.
The engraved date is MDLXI (1561).
The coat of arms of Oristano is attested from the sixteenth century. It shows a pond related to the false etymology of the name Oristano: "golden pond".
Actually the coat of arms probably represented the blazon of the city capital of the Giudicato d'Arborea: from the twelve century the name of the city appears as "Aureum Stagnum" (golden pond).
