The Sartiglia in honour of Charles V in 1547

23 marzo 2021

Thanks to some precious documents kept in the Historical Archives of Oristano, in this video we will talk about the first Sartiglia attested in Oristano, probably on the occasion of the victory of Charles V of Habsburg, King of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, at the battle of Mühlberg on 24th April 1547 against the league of protestant princes.

In the volume relating to the administration of the city of the year 1547 to '48, in the accounts of the clavario (the bursar of the time), there is the note of a payment to mossèn Nicolao Pinna for the expenses he incurred for the purchase of a black cloth of fine fabric, the prize for the winner of the Sartiglia in honour of Charles V.

Reading these accounting notes, it would seem that the Sartiglia was organised to celebrate the exploits of the Emperor, who was engaged in those years both against the Turks of Suleiman the Magnificent and against the Protestants.

It is also possible that the Sartiglia we are talking about is even a few years earlier: in fact, the payment could be related to supplies and works carried out in previous years.
