In the 11th century the city of Oristano was capital of the reign and seat of the archdiocese of Arborea. The city reached its heyday between the 13th and the 14th century, thanks to a flourishing trade in the Mediterranean basin. In this period, inhabited areas called brugus rose around the walled city (su portu). The original wall run along via Mazzini, via Solferino, via Cagliari and via Contini up to Piazza Roma. There were 4 entrance doors and 28 guard towers: Porta Manna or Porta Ponti in the north, a small one called Portixedda in the east, Porta Sant’Antonio in the west and Porta Mari, the main entrance of the city. The itinerary ends in the Archaeological Museum Antiquarium Arborense to see the plastic model of Oristano capital of the Giudicato d’Arborea.
