The Sartiglia of Oristano is one of the few races of this kind in Europe. The chief characters are masked horsemen who try to pierce a star: the race has place in the walled old city along the way that, from the royal palace of the king of the Giudicato d’Arborea, leads to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, up to the Medieval Hospital of Sant’Antonio. Afterwards there are the acrobatic races in via Mazzini in a track that, in ancient times, run along the turreted wall of the city.
The route is characterised by the visit to the Chapel of the Gremio dei Falegnami di San Giuseppe, inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the church of the Madonna del Carmine; then, passing through the streets where the Sartiglia takes place, the route ends in the church of San Martino, chapel of the two last confraternities of the city.
